What is the difference between a gym sandbag and a powerbag?

A power bag is strength-and-conditioning gear, commonly cylindrical in shape. It has multiple handles and is covered in soft, durable material designed for intense workouts. Power bags are commonly used for squats, presses, and lunges. While a gym sandbag is filled with loose sand, it lacks multiple handles and is made of a heavy-duty outer shell. The sand inside shifts constantly while you move, making it highly unstable and forcing your core and stabiliser muscles to work twice as hard.

What are the benefits of training with weighted bags?

Weighted bags (either sandbag or powerbag) are effective fitness gear to improve cardio, build core strength, stability and athletic performance. A weighted sandbag can also help with fat burning and weight loss, if used in intense workouts. If you are using a powerbag, its multiple handles allow you to improve your grip strength, which is important when you are transitioning to heavier free weights.

How do I choose the right weight for a weighted bag?

If you are buying a powerbag, beginners should start with 10kg to 15kg, while heavy or advanced lifters usually choose 20kg to 25kg. If you are doing high-rep functional fitness, HIIT, or explosive movements, buy a lighter powerbag. But if you are focusing on strength and conditioning exercises, like heavy squats or power bag lunges, choose a heavier weighted bag (20-25kg).

Can I use a sandbag or powerbag for slamming exercises?

Avoid using a sandbag or powerbag as a substitute for a slam ball. While our powerbags and sandbags are built incredibly tough to withstand being dropped during a heavy clean or carry, or lunges. Repeatedly slamming them directly onto hard ground can eventually break the zippers or destroy the seams. So if you are performing slamming workouts, buy a Northern slam ball instead.

Can you use a powerbag for high-intensity cardio or HIIT?

Because these weighted bags are soft and easy to use, they are an effective tool for fast-paced metabolic conditioning. Performing non-stop movements like sandbag thrusters, bear-hug lunges, and shoulder drills will increase your heart rate, making it the perfect choice for burning fat and extra calories.
